Every Child Needs A Mentor has inspired thousands of students and staff members across the country. Based on our years of experience and research we have gained valuable insights into understanding student behaviours, creating incentives that work and how to get children to achieve their best.

Our work is in line with the outcomes of Ofsted and is influenced by the views and feedback of School Inspectors, Senior Leadership Teams, Leaders in Children Services and teachers. We rely heavily on data and we are solely focused on achieving results as this means the life chances of children will be improved. Our award-winning approach has been recognised as “high quality” by Ofsted and is acknowledged by many professionals as “leading practice.”

In this section, we have showcased a range of case studies, infographics that illustrate transformation, letters of recommendation for our work and quotes from the young people themselves, the parents who love them and the professionals who work with them. Please click on the images to view the case studies and letters of recommendation.

Growing up here posed challenges; Drugs, violence and gang issues were part of everyday life, either seeing it from older peers, witnessing it within the community or being directly involved. Fortunately, my family are incredibly supportive, and I was too interested in sport to get involved with drugs, but I had a short fuse and at times would explode with anger.

By year 9 I was beginning to fall behind academically and some of my peers had been ‘moved on’; excluded permanently, sent to youth offenders, moved out of the borough. It was difficult to witness this happening to those close to me. I never wanted it to happen to but at the same time, peer pressure meant it was difficult to ‘lose face’ and trying to get out of that circle of stupidity felt like an impossibility.

My form tutor  began to lay foundations and identify critical issues I needed support with. I was introduced to Herman Stewart, who we didn’t have to call sir. He  loved the things we loved. He spoke like us and could relate to us. Most importantly, Herman showed he cared by giving us time. Herman was our teacher, our mentor, our guide. He was the person who made it possible to see beyond school, beyond exams, beyond a potential life of crime and into the future where in his words ‘You can become what you dream of becoming and it’ll be easier to put the work in now. Sooner rather than later.’

Herman was relentless with his work; there wasn’t a detention he didn’t know about, an issue he wasn’t aware of or a missed homework that went unnoticed. He was always there to support me; be the shoulder to cry on, the wall to listen to problems and an advisor… ‘Come and see me when the lesson is finished unless it’s an emergency’. He taught me resilience. I knew he was there for me.

My work with Herman continued throughout years 10 and 11. I was moved up a set in Maths and English and our school football team won the double with Herman as manager. Herman used to run football sessions and DJ’ing sessions for us during lunchtime and after school to upskill us and keep us engaged, it was our carrot, something to prevent us from causing problems in the community.

During one half term he signposted several of us to a WBA football session, I met my favourite player at the time, Jason Roberts who told me ‘Its vital you stay focused at school’. Hearing this from an idol was powerful, with the added messages from my family and Herman things started to make more sense, and school became important to me.

I left school having achieved C’s and above in all of my subjects and went to college to work towards becoming a football coach. I was successful in college and achieved the qualifications required to work in football.  I went on to work for The Albion Foundation, working in schools as a coach before an opportunity came up to work for The Albion Foundation education team in schools as a Mentor. Having evening and weekend capacity allowed me to continue coaching and I went to work as a coach for West Bromwich Albion Academy; a post I still hold.  Currently, I work at Ormiston Forge Academy. My role was initially as a Mentor as part of the school’s Success Centre before progressing on to become a KS4 pastoral leader. A position I am extremely proud to hold. Herman’s work has most definitely had a positive impact on me and I will be eternally grateful for the time and effort he put in to working with me as a student and beyond.

“I cannot stress my delight at the impact that ECNM has had on my son and in particularly his individual mentor. They have been consistent in offering him sessions and really sound practical advice and coping strategies, ECNM has also been able to offer what I can only describe as good life skills.”
