Our mentoring focuses on the greatness within the child or young person. We work on building the positive, recognising the challenges and putting in strategies to enhance the good and improve the areas that need to change. We help young people and children to make better choices through our evidenced-based programmes to show that good choices make for a happier way of living and that by building strong relationships we will be helped to achieve our goals. We also work very closely with leaders, commissioners and clients to ensure we are reaching the agreed outcomes and results required.

All of our mentors are recruited using safer recruitment procedures. They hold enhanced DBS certificates just like anyone who works in schools or institutions that deal with young people and children. During the programmes, their work is monitored, and we contact parents, carers and educators for regular feedback. We have robust child protection training and systems for recognising and alerting the correct authorities for any concerns that may arise.

Counselling is a talking therapy, and like all treatments is used to help to heal something that is wrong. It is used mainly to support recovery from trauma, bereavement or mental health issues. Mentoring is not a treatment; it is a supportive relationship that allows children and young people to discover their strengths, set themselves goals and realise how to achieve them. As a solution-based process, we create a safe space allowing young people to discover issues that need to be talked through and overcome and our mentors support with strategies, viable alternatives and steps that help build self-confidence and resilience.

Mentoring can help by providing practical support, building self-esteem and confidence. Goal setting and really understanding what the mentee wants in life (or helping them to discover what they would want) allows a pathway to be imagined and mapped out. It is seen as part of the Informal Education that helps us to build relationships and become caring and responsible members of society. Many young people need support in realising their ambitions; they feel foolish to acknowledge them in public, especially if they feel they are reaching beyond what they feel others think is their ceiling. School mentors are often used in a reactive capacity and form part of the Behavioural Team of the school. ECNM works as a pro-active partner in supporting leaders to reach as many students as possible to show overall School Improvement. We expect our mentors to produce tangible results which are documented and reported so that Pastoral Leads can show impact. As an objective outside agency the young people involved feel that the process is supportive rather than punitive and our mentors are solely involved in the mentoring process and not needed to deal with other issues. By employing us with 2 mentors for 2 days a week we can see up to 120 students per academic year at a much smaller cost than the average salary of a full-time employee.

Our involvement can save money as outlined above, but other ways are possible. Some schools allocate LAC (Looked After Children) funds to support that group of students. So many people want to become mentors which is really positive; hence why we want to help and support as many people as possible. However, due to the demand and the vulnerability of young people, as an organisation we are rigorous about ensuring the right people become mentors. If you want to become a mentor, it would be good for you to consider why do you want to become a mentor? Who would you like to mentor? And in what setting would you like to deliver mentoring? Being clear on the age of the young person you would like to support, and in what capacity, i.e. supporting them with their school work, social skills or aspirations will also help.

As an organisation we recruit mentors who are very effective with young people, have experience and have a set of qualities that are core to who we are and what we believe, which is essential for the development and well-being of young people.  We have a rigorous recruitment process that adheres to safer recruitment standards to ensure we place the right people before young people. We respect that some may have mentoring experience but all mentors will have to go through our training if they are to deliver our mentoring programmes within organisations that we work with in partnership. We are aware that many people have different views of mentoring. However our views are that mentoring is a profession and is to be delivered professionally, so those who work with us will need to have passion and desire to be exceptional mentors and have prior evidence of this passion.
